With the Christmas season coming to a close, it's time to think about how to wrap things up sustainably until next year As we move through the first few days of January, the urge to reset and cleanse our homes is real. Although we may feel a little sad at the thought of taking down our beautiful festive decor, another part of us is itching to get things back to normal! But how exactly do you dispose of your tree, candle holders, unwanted toys or decorations? Whether it’s recycled, donated or regifted, Irish Country Magazine contributor and sustainability expert Jo Linehan has the ultimate reuse guide for a circular 2024. Christmas trees Local county councils are organising drop-off points where the trees can be managed responsibly. Mywaste.ie has a map including WEEE drop-offs and Civic Amenity sites but they're not specifically for Christmas trees. Always contact your local council or Civic Amenity site to check before going. Candles Use hot water to get rid of remaining wax, then re-cycle or reuse the jar - for example, planting herbs, as a toothbrush holder, storing jewellery etc. Small electronics Global data shows that 25 million toys, cables, remote controls, and USB sticks are lying in landfill sites, homes and sheds across Ireland today. Recycle these at your local amenity site, local Harvey Norman shops or you can check with other electronic stores in your area. Unwanted toys and gifts Barnardos is running a toy drive right now so you can donate any toys your children are no longer using to them. You can also join your local Freecycle group on Facebook where you can offer unwanted items to people in your area. If they are in excellent condition, you can also sell them on Done Deal or Buy and Sell. Other items Did you know that NCBI Dublin will collect the following items for free: Sofas, suites, armchairs, tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, lamps, bedroom furniture, clothes, books, collectables and homeware. Oxfam Dublin takes donations of furniture on Kings Inn Street and Francis Street. Age Action accepts drop-offs of clothing, footwear and handbags nationwide.
