The IFTA 2018 nominees we are excited for

Maudie, Game of Thrones and Vikings top the list of IFTA Film & Drama Award nominees as are some of our favourite and emerging talents. Here's what you need to know (and watch!) before the ceremony

  • Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird

Maudie, the moving film starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke directed by Aisling Walsh is in the running for six IFTA Award nominations, as is Irish drama Vikings.

Fans of Peaky Blinders and Game of Thrones will be unsurprised to hear the addictive shows have each earned 5 nominations, with new show Paula, starring Denise Gough, up for four.

The awards, which takes place on 15 February, is a celebration of the Irish film and television industry, as host Deirdre O'Kane explained, and the list of nominees recognises not only the fantastic talent working in Ireland now but also those with their hands in projects further afield.

Toast of Hollywood Saoirse Ronan is nominated for her role in Lady Bird, alongside Sarah Bolger and Ann Skelly. The Drama category sees Peaky Blinders' Cillian Murphy and Mr Mercedes' Brendan Gleeson nominated.

And Natalie Portman can stand down, as two female directors are up for awards. Aisling Walsh is nominated for Maudie, up against Frank Berry, John Butler, Martin McDonagh and Mark O'Connor. Dearbhla Walsh is nominated for her work on the drama Fargo, alongside Peaky Blinder's David Caffrey, Rob Quinn and Steve Saint Leger.
