To celebrate the launch of his new range, we caught up with hairstylist to the stars Andrew Fitzsimons
Andrew Fitzsimons is a name in the contact list of everyone from The Kardashians to Jennifer Lopez. The Dublin-born stylist is one of Hollywood’s favourites, and his new haircare range has just hit shelves. Available exclusively at Boots, the range includes styling products as well as specially-formulated shampoos and conditioners. We asked Andrew some pressing questions about life in hairstyling and his newest range.
What does an average working day look like for you?
Lately, I have to wake up super early in Los Angeles to have meetings with my brand team members who are in Europe. The day usually starts with a few calls, then I head to work with a client. In the early afternoon, I have more meetings with my team in New York and will often have a client to do in the evening. I also have to travel often with my clients, so that makes the schedule a bit more chaotic, but I wouldn’t change it!
What’s your golden rule when it comes to hair?
My golden rule is to always work with the hair and not fight against it. Learning how your hair behaves and working with your natural texture will always give you the best result that will suit you the best.
What’s the biggest challenge in doing celebrity hair?
This isn’t a “challenge”, per se, but doing celebrity hair comes with a certain kind of pressure, as my work gets seen by millions of people on a daily basis. When the work is that visible, there’s pressure to constantly perform at your best, as well as regularly come up with fresh ideas.

When did you feel like you had ‘made it’?
Throughout my career, I’ve been very methodical about setting goals that I want to achieve. Early on, these were things like getting an agent, working with certain publications and certain talent, and so on. To be honest, the launch of this brand is a big “made it” moment for me; it’s been a dream of mine to release a haircare brand that not only provides a luxury experience at an accessible price, but also sells to women in a responsible way and clearly stands for inclusion and representation.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the beauty industry?
Learn your references! When I was first starting out — before Instagram — I would spend all my free time at the library studying fashion editorials. It’s important to understand the trends and “rules” that came before, so you know how to develop your own point of view and break those rules to create something new. That, and be prepared to work hard. This is an industry with long hours and the world is often not very glamorous. You have to be willing to roll your sleeves up and make yourself irreplaceable through the quality of your work.
What has been a career highlight?
I generally get excited for every style I create, most likely the last hairstyle that sticks out in my mind – Megan Fox at the Met Gala, 2021. Having a client who is open to your ideas really fuels my creativity.
What are the standout products in the new range?
I have been mixing and matching all of my favourite products throughout the years since I started 20 years ago. So I always knew that I wanted to create products that I love and create a collection that was user friendly, that was natural hair focused so everyone can fall in love with their natural texture again. Après Sexe Texture Spray took the longest to create. I’m a huge texture spray lover. The two unique things about this product: it’s buildable, and no matter your hair density you can use this product. Great for finer hair types, yet curly hair types can use it as it has conditioning agents. So pump up the volume!
I’m really excited for people to try out Model. I was inspired to create it by observing the women in New York on the subway, with wet hair, in sneakers, ready for a full day. The product is your hairstylist in a bottle. Spray it in and go. It will enhance and refine your natural texture.
