18 exciting new movies all starring women

Not only have the leading ladies of Hollywood been busy with the moving Time’s Up campaign, they’ve also been making some incredible films. Here’s what we can’t wait to see this year

  • Lady Bird

The movies we can’t wait to see this year star some of our favourite Hollywood talents. From murder mysteries and crime thrillers as to the revival of Mary Poppins and Lara Croft, we’re going to be first in line with popcorn in hand.

1. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is written and directed by Greta Gerwig and is arguably the most talked about film ahead of Oscar season. Saoirse Ronan plays Lady Bird, actually named Christine McPherson, a coming-of-age story about a rebellious teenager determined to flee her hometown and stand out from the crowd. Saoirse has already won a Golden Globe for Best Actress and the film also won in the Best Comedy or Musical category. Out 16 February

2. A Wrinkle in Time

Disney’s film adaptation of Madeleine l’Engel’s otherworldly novel sees Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling play mystical women leading three children on an adventure to a sinister planet. The heroine, a young girl named Meg, is determined to save her father, and must embrace what makes her different in order to save the day on a planet where everyone is forced to conform. Out March

3. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

The sequel sees a pregnant Sophie learn about her mother’s past. As well as Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep returning, Cher is joining the cast as Sophie’s gatecrashing grandmother and Lily James will play the young Donna. July 2018

4. Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt steps into Julie Andrew’s shoes as the beloved nanny in the sequel set 25 years later. The all-star cast includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep and will see Mary Poppins revisit the now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks and his three children to help them deal with a personal loss. December 2018

5. Ocean’s 8

Sandra Bullock gathers an all female team to pull off a heist at the biggest night in fashion, The Met Gala. Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina and Sarah Paulson also star. June 2018

6. Annihilation

Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh star in this truly scary adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s dramatic sci fi novel. Natalie’s character leads a team of five women into a mysterious jungle populated by deadly alien creatures, attempting to find a cure for the mystery illness her husband contracted in an expedition in the jungle. February 2018

7. Red Sparrow

Jennifer Lawrence teams up with the director of the final three Hunger Games instalments Francis Lawrence in this spy thriller. Lawrence plays a Russian prima ballerina who becomes a lethal spy trained to seduce and manipulate the enemy. March 2018

8. Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the horror franchise that helped make her a household name. Reprising her role as Laurie Strode, 40 years after mass murderer Michael Myers first donned the mask. October 2018

9. Tomb Raider

Alicia Vikander takes on the video game character made famous by Angelina Jolie. This will tell the origin story of the brainy adventurer. March 2018

10. On Chesil Beach

Toast of Hollywood Saoirse Ronan stars as a loved-up newlywed navigating romance in the repressed 60s in this adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novella. June 2018

11. Mary Queen of Scots

Saoirse Ronan has been busy! She plays the titular monarch in this biopic where she will go head to head with Margot Robbie’s Elizabeth II. The movie follows Mary’s return to England from France after being widowed and sees her try to overthrow her cousin. November 2018

12. Widows

Four widows decide to finish off the heist that killed their husbands in this crime thriller written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. Starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Cynthia Erivo and Elizabeth Debicki, the film will be directed by Steve McQueen in his first film since 12 Years a Slave. November 2018

13. Proud Mary

Taraji P. Henson plays an assassin whose life is turned upside down when she encounters a young boy when a job goes awry. March 2018

14. Thoroughbreds

Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy play teenage best friends who arrange to have Taylor-Joy’s stepfather killed in this quirky murder mystery caper. March 2018

15. Where’d You Go Bernadette?

Based on the novel by Maria Semple, a 15-year-old tries to track down her anxiety-ridden mother who has disappeared, learning more about her troubled past in the process. May 2018

16. The Girl in The Spider’s Web

Claire Foy is the third actor to take on the role of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the fourth novel in the Millenium series. October 2018

17. Lizzie

Another Hollywood interpretation of the story of alleged axe murderer Lizzie Borden since Christina Ricci’s portrayal in the Lifetime movie and spin-off Netflix series. This film is hoping to show Borden in a new light. Chloë Sevigny plays Lizzie and Kristen Stewart plays the family’s live in maid in the film which shows the pair grow close as tensions in the house rise in the run-up to the murder of Lizzie’s parents. 2018

18. Dumplin’

A girl with the nickname Dumplin’ enters a beauty pageant in order to win the affections of her crush and to one-up the girls in school who judge her for her size. Jennifer Aniston plays the overbearing mother of Danielle Macdonald’s character Dumplin’. 2018
